Description

Self Checkout - Unknown Item Best Practices

How many items do not scan at the self checkout? In 2025, the answer to that question from the retailers who participated in the meeting ranged from 1 to 100+ per day, per store.

For one retailer, 3% of the transactions included an item that did not scan.

So what? For some, the motivation to get on top of this problem is to remove one reason for a slower checkout experience and opportunity to remove friction.

For others, it is seen as a source of financial loss, does the item get sold or even paid for? While others are concerned with the inaccuracies, if the item was allocated to a dump / open code, how can the forecasting for replenishment be accurate if the true sales number is not known?

In this years meeting we will catch up with the retailers in the group to explore the work they have done in the last 12 months to bring greater visibility to this problem, to remove the upstream causes of failure and the work at the store, to change culture and better manage the checkout experience.

This meeting is for retailers, CPG's and academics only.
