Event overview
Our previous reports have highlighted the scale and impact of inaccurate inventory records. This session builds on that foundation by exploring a critical next step: how retailers can move beyond identifying errors to predicting where they are most likely to occur—and acting sooner.
Drawing on a large, multi-retailer evidence base, the latest findings show that a significant proportion of stock record inaccuracies is not random, but predictable. This creates an opportunity to target counting effort more precisely and improve efficiency across store operations.
Importantly, not all errors carry equal risk. Phantom stock —where systems indicate stock that is not physically present—remains particularly damaging, suppressing replenishment and directly driving lost sales. The research demonstrates that these high-risk issues can be identified more effectively through intelligent use of data.
The implication is clear: stock counting remains essential, but it must become smarter. This session will explore how to prioritise effort, focus on volatile categories, and test prediction-led approaches in a controlled way. Join us to discuss how to count better, improve on-shelf availability, and make more effective use of limited store resources
